In case you haven't seen it:

I was casually watching tv) and this ad showed during the commercial break. Usually, I pay no attention to ads, but this one caught my eye. Most probable because it talks about patents!
In this ad, Mercedes- Benz claims to own over 80,000 patents and that's why they're car is so great. It's interesting to me that Mercedes is including information about the number of patents they own. It seems like their marketing strategy is to play off that if you own a lot of patents, you are creators and the best. And owning 80,000 patents is quite a feat. What they don't mention is that a lot of companies own a lot of patents and a lot of trolls own patents and sue other people for more money!
Funny what they do leave out.
I agree with you that part of their marketing strategy would be to convey to consumers that they have the most patents because they are the most innovative manufacturer. The strategy does work in a sense because if Mercedes is actively advertising and therefore attracting/hiring employees that file patents doesn't that mean that they technically will be at the top of the list for new future-driven designs?
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree the commercial is trying to convey their innovative ability. It's strange when you think about the timing though. I felt like they were connecting the new benz with the patents, which themselves must be much older. But the connection should probably be more attributed to the company, not the car, given this time deficit. Then the whole commercial's logic seems a little tenuous. For example, Michelin has tons and tons of patents but that's not what we're going to point out in a commercial.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this commercial as well. Thanks for sharing. I do agree how they are trying to show the ingenuity Mercedes holds. Do you know by any chance if other big auto manufacturers own as much patents or more? I've also never heard if Mercedes has ever sued for patent infringement which you would think they might have to if they own that many patents.
